How Carrie met Superman, his dog & other superheroes
Dear Lovely Business Owner,
Last autumn, I hopped on a Virgin train, to head to volunteer for the
week-end for the Royal Marines Commando Challenge; which is an event
owned by and raising funds for Devon Air Ambulance and the Royal Marines
Charity, who are the invisible superheroes of the world. I felt that it
would be fun to do something different with my week-end and give
something back, and meet new people, so off I went!
In our daily lives it can be easy to take things for granted, I do it
too. Like knowing that we are loved, that we are cared for and that we
matter all of which give our lives meaning.
From the moment I signed up to be volunteer, I felt that I mattered,
Rosey, Caroline, Sarah, and Tina made me feel like I was part of a team which
was considering that we had never met was utterly lovely 🙂 On arrival
in the field, they were just as lovely, which was just wonderful,
priceless even. Even the serving Royal Marines like Jim, and .. blonde
moment, two other chaps one with a dog, the other like his brother, were
so lovely and welcoming and really made me feel part of their team,
which is just lovely, when you are a complete stranger to each other!!
You know like on the second day, driving up a hill to check I had my
lunch, or giving me an extra packet of crisps, as I couldn’t eat all of
the packed lunch, being a vegan; how lovely 🙂 !!! Heartwarmingly
lovely.
To be honest, I have only met two real-life Royal Marines, and both had
a great sense of humour, were salt of the earth chaps, and always seemed
to be able to get things done and do whatever it took. Trademark
characteristics of a typical Royal Marine, apparently.
They were not known for their emotional expression, though, but hey..I
do not suppose there was much room for them whilst they were on their
missions to save the world from all kinds of dangers hey..
What struck me immediately on arriving in the field where the volunteers
gathered on Sunday morning, was that there were so many ex-Royal Marines
there. Bless their hearts. They gave up their time, chunks of their
lives to do something to give back.
These guys were true gents, and to be honest all had a calmness about
them as well as a cheekiness. One of whom called Martin, I had the
privilege of spending the day with. We were ‘on duty,’ as he said
together. on Saturday as we manned the last stop, so we were marshalls
at the end of the run, before everyone ‘de-muddied,’ themselves with a
well-deserved hot shower..
Well, to say we had a giggle was an understatement. Martin was
hilarious. And despite our differences, him being a meat-eater and me
being a Vegan, him being a man’s man, me being a girlie-girl we had a
giggle. He enlightened me on many subjects which I have never really
thought about in much detail, which actually was quite refreshing from
his theories about the how to help Ex-Royal Marines, to what was
happening all over the world, including in his brother’s fields. It;s so
lovely to share views without getting drawn into any kind of conflict
isn’t it?
People came along on the Saturday and Sunday to run the training
endurance course that the real Royal Marines use as a Training ground,
an endurance obstacle course like no other, which on closer inspection,
with two lovelies I met on the Saturday, was well a little bit tough…
The course was 4K, and some amazing runners opted to do a 10K run as
well, amazing:) A real feat endurance. Although, a few went even further
on the Sunday, and ran 17K, as well as the course.. just incredible,
superheroes supporting other superheroes.
There was a sheep dip, which you go under water for a few moments, and
then are dragged out by serving Royal Marines, or a tunnel where you
have to crawl on gravel to get through.. which for me is stuff of
nightmares…..
Plenty of mud too in other obstacles as I saw, by the state of the
runners by the time they arrived at my ‘stop,’ where I spent most of
Saturday.. they were covered from head to toe in mud.. bless their
hearts.
I loved their spirit of the runners. Truth be told I would have loved
to have done the run, but I had pulled my right knee being a little bit
over-enthusiastic doing my yoga and it hurt, whilst being a minor
twinge, I knew had I of ignored it I might have been carried off on a
stretcher from the course..
The runners were in teams and dressed up in all kinds of wonderful
costumes. My absolute favourites, were a group of ladies with pink tutus
and tiaras with lots of sparkles. Loved their costume!!!! But there
were so many,..
Given that Superman himself, Henry Cavill was apparently attending, many
runners were paying homage to him and dressed is brilliant Superman
costumes with a red cape flying behind them, giving them extra powers, I
am sure throughout the course!!
Maybe this year I will take photos of them as they were just so
inspiring, and true real-life Superheroes. Some of them you could see it
was a big stretch to get through the course, and it was heart-warming
to see them keep going, step by step! I know how easy it can be to give
up when your body is screaming at you. You felt that the causes that
they were running for, made them just keep on going, really especially
when you heard their stories.. just brought tears to your eyes..
It was lovely having a bit of banter with the runners as they made it up
the final hill, it really was 🙂 Huge amounts of fun.
One of the funniest things was that I was saying to Martin my
‘co-pilot,’ for the day,’ that .. when I see Superman himself, I am
going to resist the temptation of : ” is it a bird, is it plane, no its
superman,’ ,… and instead go for : ” Is it Mr Bond, ( * as it has been
rumoured Henry would like to be the next James Bond ) .. is it Mr Grey (
* as it has been rumoured that Henry wouldn’t mind playing Mr Grey, in
the 4th of Fifty Shades film.) .. or is it Mr Kent.. obviously.. who
Henry plays when he is not wearing his cape.. or is it… Mr Cavill,
th..e human he really is.. in real life.. or is he….
Well, the .. hilarious part of all of this, is that after all the
runners had passed, I said to my Co-pilot Martin: “Gosh Martin, after
all the excitement and build up, Henry did not turn up!!! Martin
nodded as he had not seen him afterwards.I admit, I was disappointed,
as I had practiced.. in my mind saying all of the above, I know sad but
true. but I thought at least it would be funny….
As we returned to camp, after being kindly… given a lift around the
corner by some more superheroes those lovely people in ambulance who
actually did rescue a few people from danger throughout the two days,
bless their heart. Okay, they gave us both a ride, to the main site,
which was only a v v short distance around the corner, but it really
meant the world after an afternoon standing and shouting words of
encouragement and banter…
Then, I saw the girls I had met earlier and I relayed my sheer
disappointment about not seeing Mr Cavill, after psyching myself up, and
they were er… Carrie were saw him at the water station, didn’t you see
him, he was dressed as a Royal Marine…
I was like er no, but I did remember a group of Royal Marines almost
strolling past me… like it was a their run like a walk in the park…
How funny hey.. .true Superhero behaviour…
Afterwards we all gathered around and had a cuppa and I saw Mr Cavill,
actually acting like a real-life superhero, whilst still covered in mud
being mobbed for Selfies from many, many kids and runners and well
everyone. He calmly posed, smiled, was interviewed and even when his
beloved Superdoggie Kal-El, or Big Bear excitedly came to see him, he
just carried on until all the photos had been taken.
Truth be told, I was a little too overwhelmed to go and speak to Mr
Cavill, and my British politeness overtook me, he was so mobbed it felt
a bit rude… So I got to know his beloved doggie a little bit; who is
a real charmer, nope I did not get a photo of him with me,, just a few
strokes, what a cutie 🙂 I could truly feel why he takes him
everywhere:) …But there is a photo Jeanna my friend took below 🙂
This experience truly made me realise that superheroes come in all
shapes and sizes, and there are furry ones too, as Henry’s doggie
befriended so many kids, with the gentleness and charm of his daddy, it
must be in his blood 🙂 I had the chance chatting with a few of the
runners and it was so emotional. Some of them were running in the memory
of their brother and son who had died on one of his many secret
missions, and they felt it important to do it to give back and honour
him.
There was this other lady from France, who bless her heart could hardly
walk, and she managed to make her way around the 4K course, it was
beyond me how she did . She said she was inspired by Henry, and wanted
to do a little something to make a difference in the world.
Here’s a little picture of me and the girls with some Royal Marines,
blonde moment, I cannot remember their names, they were utterly lovely,
as were all of the volunteers that I had the joy of meeting 🙂
Here’s Henry himself being interviewed, the last few minutes are the
golden parts to me:
“ONE THING YOU LEARN ABOUT WORKING WITH PEOPLE LIKE THIS, IS THAT YOU
SEE THESE INCREDIBLY STRONG, POWERFUL AND CHARISMATIC AND YOU REALISE
THAT THEY ARE GOING TO GO THROUGH STUFF THAT MAY CHANGE THEM FOREVER AND
THEY MAY BE THE LIVE AND SOUL OF THE PARTY AND THEN ALL OF SUDDEN THEIR
LIFE CHANGES DRAMATICALLY AND THAT WE NEED TO BE THERE FOR THEM WHEN IT
DOES, BECAUSE THEY HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THERE FOR US. AND SO IT'S NOT
OKAY THAT WE THINK THAT THEY DON'T NEED US. THEY DO. THEY NEED US AT
ALL TIMES. THEY NEED US WHEN THEY ARE HAPPY, AND THEN NEEDS US WHEN THEY
ARE SAD TOO. AND THAT'S WHAT THIS CHARITY IS ALL ABOUT. ”
